A Holistic Approach to Medical School Admissions

Medical School Admissions Process

For more than four decades, our dedicated faculty and staff have been successfully transforming hardworking and determined students – who like you, realized their calling to practice medicine. Our Admissions Committee considers many factors when reviewing an applicant for admission to our 4-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. These include undergraduate performance and MCAT score, as well as intellectual and social maturity, critical judgment, adaptability, volunteer work, and life experiences, and graduate school performance (if applicable). We call this a holistic approach to med school admissions—a process that looks at an applicant as a whole person, not an exam score.

3 Start Dates

January, May, September

We enroll three new classes each year in September, January, and May, and accept med school applications year-round. Though the program length is the same for all three start dates, keep in mind that selecting one start date over another may be beneficial to you.

  • Students are on a similar trajectory, in terms of timing, to that of students attending US or Canadian medical schools

  • The September class is generally the largest, making it better for class ranking

  • You'll have the entire summer to prepare for medical school

  • Small class size

  • You'll have more flexibility and time to prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) Step 2 CK and CS exams, as well as schedule electives

  • You'll have a completed residency application, in hand, for the next National Resident Matching Program®  residency cycle

  • Schedule and attend residency interviews without academic responsibilities

  • A completed residency application to apply with when the NRMP opens in early September

  • Students who fail a class can still make the Match in four years

  • Be practice-ready months earlier than students starting in the traditional September fall start.

  • Smaller class sizes, meaning you can get more individual attention and close-up experiences with our expert faculty.

Career Changers

While plenty of physicians have dreamed of being a doctor since childhood, many take a little longer to decide that medicine is their calling.

Med School Admissions FAQS

AUC's Admissions Committee considers many factors when reviewing a med school applicant for consideration. Medical school admissions requirements include undergraduate performance and MCAT score, as well as intellectual and social maturity, critical judgment, adaptability, volunteer work, and life experiences, and graduate school performance (if applicable). Our goal is to provide you with all of the information and guidance you need to explore AUC as a medical school option and make the best decision to suit your career and life objectives.

The medical school admission process varies from school to school. At AUC, you start by completing an application online. Once you have completed your online application, you will be assigned an admissions ambassador who will reach out for supporting documents.

At AUC, we have no no single medical school admission timeline because we operate under a rolling admissions policy. This means we offer three start dates—September, January, and May. This gives you the freedom to start medical school when it's right for you. Admissions deadlines are four weeks before the start of each semester.

The AUC Admissions team recommends starting your application as early as possible. Candidates should apply to AUC at least one month prior to their desired start time.

AUC looks at both overall GPA and science GPA. AUC’s Admissions Committee considers many factors when reviewing an applicant for consideration - GPA is only one of them. Depending on the circumstances, a student with a lower GPA may be accepted, especially if the student excels in other aspects of the medical school application evaluation.

Premed programs' course requirements may vary from institution to institution; however, they typically include the following:

  • Biochemistry (one semester)
  • Biology (two semesters with a lab)
  •  English (two semesters)
  • General chemistry (two semesters with a lab)
  • Math (two semesters)
  • Organic chemistry (two semesters with lab)
  • Physics (two semesters with a lab)
  • Psychology and Statistics are sometimes required

At AUC, a bachelor’s degree with a strong science background is preferred. AUC’s course requirements* are as follows:

  • Two semesters (8 credit hours) including labs for each of the following:
    • General biology
    • General chemistry
    • Organic chemistry or biochemistry
  • One semester of:
    • General physics, calculus, or statistics

*Substitutions and/or exceptions for med school prerequisites are made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Admissions Dean and Faculty Admissions Committee.

Yes, or a similar alternative. Most medical schools, including AUC, require a generous exposure to mathematics in addition to general physics. Substitutions and/or exceptions for med school prerequisites are made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the admissions committee and the chair of the admissions committee.  Math can sometimes be critical in the medical profession — think of pharmacokinetics or measuring blood flow, cardiac output, or tumor growth, for example. No. Undergraduate students can major in whatever they like, but they must take the necessary courses that fulfill premed requirements. Medical schools need to determine a student’s ability to succeed in the biological and physical sciences courses.

The basics for students to get into medical school include:

  • Taking premed classes
  • Taking the MCAT
  • Letters of recommendation
  • CV or resume
  • Personal statement
  • University transcripts
